Sassy in a Wheelchair

Sassy Gets A New Set Of Wheels

Sassy’s inaugural day with her new wheelchair unfolded amid the backdrop of her high anxiety and struggle with degenerative myelopathy (DM). Seeking constant proximity to my wife, her loyal companion, Sassy faced the challenge of adapting to a wheelchair due to the loss of function in her hind legs.

Sassy’s New Wheelchair

In the early days, Sassy, propelled by determination, would drag herself forward using her front legs, but it was evident that a wheelchair would provide her with enhanced mobility and prevent further strain on her back legs. The initial experience in the wheelchair was a stressful endeavor for both Sassy and us, her caregivers.

Despite the challenges, patience prevailed as she navigated the learning curve, occasionally running and still adapting to the newfound mode of transportation. In the open field, her exuberance sometimes led to collisions, tipping her and the wheelchair over, prompting our swift rescue missions to set her upright again.

Her interactions with the wheelchair showcased a mix of determination and the inevitable learning process. Sassy ran into obstacles, including us, with occasional tumbles, but each instance became a lesson in resilience. As she continued to explore the capabilities of her wheelchair, it was evident that, with time and practice, she would become more adept at maneuvering through her surroundings.

The initial stress and challenges marked a significant step in Sassy’s journey, her adaptation to the wheelchair hinted at a future where mobility and freedom will become synonymous with her indomitable spirit.
